The Star of Every Spice Box.

There is no mistaking Annachi Poo. That warm, sweet, liquorice-like aroma that rises the moment it hits a hot pan — it is one of the most distinctive and beloved fragrances in South Indian cooking. Star Anise has been a cornerstone of Tamil and South Indian cuisine for centuries, lending its deep, complex flavour to biryanis, gravies, and spice blends that define the region's culinary identity.

But Annachi Poo is more than a spice. In traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic medicine, it has long been valued for its therapeutic properties — a kitchen ingredient that doubles as a natural remedy.

Culinary Uses

  • Biryanis & rice dishes — an essential whole spice in the tempering base for authentic Tamil biryani and pulao
  • Gravies & curries — adds warmth and depth to meat, chicken, and vegetable gravies
  • Spice blends — a key component in garam masala, biryani masala, and meat masala
  • Teas & herbal drinks — simmered in water or milk for a warming, digestive herbal brew
  • Pickling & preserves — used in traditional pickles and chutneys for its preserving and flavouring properties

Wellness Benefits

  • Digestive aid — relieves bloating, gas, and indigestion; traditionally consumed after heavy meals
  • Respiratory support — its natural compounds help ease coughs, congestion, and sore throats
  • Antimicrobial properties — contains anethole, a natural compound with proven antibacterial and antifungal activity
  • Rich in antioxidants — supports overall immunity and fights oxidative stress
  • Hormonal balance — traditionally used in Siddha medicine to support women's health and hormonal regulation

How to Use

Add 1–2 whole star anise pods to hot oil at the start of cooking to release their flavour into the base. Remove before serving or leave in for a stronger flavour. For a digestive tea, simmer 1–2 pods in 200ml of water for 5 minutes, strain, and drink warm with a touch of honey.

Store in an airtight container away from direct sunlight to preserve aroma and potency.
